Day 1 ARRIVE IN QUITO, ECUADOR Your Small Group Discovery tour begins! Welcome to Ecuador, where your Quito hotel is available for mid-afternoon check-in.

Day 2 QUITO Quintessential Quito On an included city tour with a Local Guide, see Independence Square with its Government and the Bishops Palace as well as the Cathedral. On the way to San Francisco Square, visit the church of La Compañia, which has the most ornate and richly sculptured façade and interior. Afterwards, step inside the church of San Francisco. Then enjoy a behind-the-scenes immersion on a specific topic of pre-Colombian art at the El Alabado Museum, one of the best archaeological collections of Ecuador. Day 4 QUITO–ECUADOR’S AMAZONEcuador’s Coming up Roses! After breakfast, travel to the Amazon region. En route, visit a rose plantation for a guided tour. Continue into the Amazon—a stone’s throw from the eastern slopes of the Andes. At the edge of the Napo River, you’ll find Ahuano Point, a small but growing village, where many Quichua people do their daily shopping. It was here, in this reverie hamlet, where Swiss expatriate Beni Ammeter opened a general store in 1985. In those days, when foreign travelers made their way to Ahuano and needed a place to stay, they were inevitably directed to La Casa del Suizo. Happy to have visitors from afar, Beni warmly welcomed them into his home. Eventually, his residence became so popular that he constructed a few cabins to better accommodate the steady flow of travelers. Enjoy a 2-night stay here in a rustic, yet tastefully constructed cabaña, nestled comfortably above the banks of the Napo River. Day 7 BAÑOS–CHIMBORAZO NATIONAL PARK–RIOBAMBA Historic Retreats After breakfast, follow the River Cutuchi and admire the views over the Amazon basin as we wind our way to Riobama. En route, take a short and easy hike for about 1.5 mi. (2km) to the stunning Devil’s Cauldron waterfall. Enjoy the verdant forest landscape, walk along the hanging bridge, and get splashed by the waterfall’s plunging water. Continue south to Riobamba, the capital of the province of Chimborazo, where a great number of indigenous communities live. Visit the base of Ecuador´s Chimborazo volcano. En route, visit the ancient [LF] Inca ruin site of Ingapirca, the most important monument of pre-Spanish culture in Ecuador. Continue to Cuenca, where Humboldt recovered from his exhausting journey. This afternoon, a sightseeing tour of Cuenca’s includes the historic Santa Ana de los Rios de Cuenca square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plaza Mayor, surrounded by its two distinct cathedrals and city hall. Admire this historical center’s colorful buildings that have maintained their colonial magnificence. Pass by the vibrant flower market and appreciate the smell of different perfumes floating in the air. Then, visit the eclectic style church Todos los Santos by the Tombamba River. Peak inside to appreciate the beautifully painted ceilings. Tonight is free to explore this lively historic city at leisure. (B)

INCAN INGENUITY The ruins of Ingapirca remain on a grass-covered hill at an altitude of about 10,170 ft. (3,100 m). On a guided walk through the former palace where the Incas lived and held their ceremonies, learn about the civilization’s beliefs and rituals and how this ordination place was constructed in the shape of a puma. While walking through the ruins, reflect on the drawings by a renowned early explorer of Ecuador—Prussian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt—often considered the "Father of Physical Geography." A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cuenca is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural gems not to be missed.

Day 9 CUENCAA Tip of the Hat Today we venture to a few key villages around Cuenca where skilled artisans work wonders. Among those is Gualaceo, with its markets where you can find hand woven shawls, ponchos, and local fruits and vegetables. You’ll also visit Bullcay for Ikat weaving and Chordeleg’s “Chorro de Oro” (waterfall of gold)—a village specialized in jewelry, mainly gold and silver with fine filigree work, and handmade ceramic pottery. Continue to southwest of Cuenca to the small district of Sigsig, famous for its handicrafts. Here, watch the people known as [LF] "Toquilleras" make the famous Panama hats and other straw objects. Then, try to make something with straw and bring your craft home. Return to Cuenca for a special dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D)

LOCAL FAVORITE Did you know that the original “Panama Hats” were made in Ecuador? The famous light-colored straw hats reminiscent of suave, well-dressed men and actors in Panama, actually originated and were historically made in Ecuador. The hat’s production began as a cottage industry in the coast of Ecuador in the 1600’s and was weaved from the local Toquilla plant by artisans called Toquilleras. The quality of the hat was judged by the number of weaves per square inch and the best-made hats (called “superfino”) hats were said to be able to hold water and fit through a wedding ring when rolled!

Day 10 CUENCA–GUAYAQUILGifts from the Earth Today, on the drive to Guayaquil, you will notice the dramatic changes of vegetation. Observe the typical Páramo grassland, small colorful flowers, mosses, lichens and fungi abruptly change once you reach the lowlands where rice, cacao and banana plantations abound. En route, visit the Cacao Project, a woman-owned small business and plantation producing the fruit to make traditional sweets and chocolates. Continue to Guayaquil for a free evening. (B,L)

This tropical city of over two million people spreads out along the banks of chocolate-colored Guayas River, about 12 miles from Gulf of Guayaquil. The river, navigable for the largest of ocean vessels, makes this one of the Pacific's most important and best-protected ports. Visitors find the city itself is primarily valued as a gateway for the Galapagos Island and the rest of the country. Ecuador's scenic capital Quito can be reached via a 45-minute flight from Guayaquil. Lush green hillsides, snow-capped volcano cones and brilliant sunshine combine to make the city a charming surprise. Guayaquil offers a rich and interesting history. The meeting of Bolivar and San Martin is commemorated with the colonnaded La Rotunda facing the river. Other attractions include Colon Park where the city was founded, the Santo Domingo Church and the cemetery, often called the White City. With its elaborate tombs and monuments, this is one of South America's most striking burial grounds.

Ride Like a Local - 4 hours

One of the best ways to truly get to know a city is by using its public transportation systems. Be it buses, trains, subways or airways, they all give a real taste of what it really is to live in a specific city. Today you are welcome to be part of the experience of the locals and admire Guayaquil from above onboard the recently inaugurated Guayaquil Airway, an environmentally friendly project that seeks to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide into the air.

You will be picked up from the port and driven onboard the coach towards Parque Centenario Station where you will take the airway and, along with your guide board one of the cabins and go all the way through the Guayas River in a 20 minutes ride towards the station of Daule, where we will disembark and take the ride back to Guayaquil where you will debark at Four Mosqueteros station.

Adding the final touch to this exciting half-day visit the Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum of Guayaquil (MAAC) that has an area of more than 9000 square feet. The museum is a pleasant surprise, not only because of its display of modern art, but because of the size and extent of its archeological collection. The MAAC is a great way to see more of Ecuador’s culture and history – and spend some time out of the sun.

At the end, board the bus and drive back to the quayside.

Cerro Blanco Wildlife and Forest Trail - 4.5 hours

Introducing the "Cerro Blanco Wildlife and Forest Trail" - a tour of the largest and best-preserved dry forest in Ecuador. Explore the protected forest, located in the extreme Southwest of the Chongón Colonche mountain range, just outside the city. This adventure departs early in the morning and takes you on a 1.2 km trail, showcasing the breathtaking biodiversity of the area, the trail is called “Canoa”

The Cerro Blanco Protected Forest boasts an impressive number of endemic vascular plants, which protect approximately 100 of the 500 species registered in the tropical dry forest region. If we are lucky, you'll discover the magnificent range of wildlife that includes 54 species of mammals, such as monkeys, peccaries, agouti, 6 species of wild cats, including the majestic Jaguar, and 34 species of bats. Bird lovers will have the opportunity to spot a few of the 221 species of birds registered in the area that includes the endangered Great Green Macaw (Papagayo), which is the symbol of Cerro Blanco. Not to mention the 8 species of amphibians and 12 species of reptiles. It is important to note wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

During your walk along the trail, you will experience a variety of landscapes, including the forest and mangrove. The route is divided into two sections. The first section is a mountainous terrain, where you will find small slopes, rocky paths, and a native vegetation of the dry forest. This part of the trail offers the perfect vantage points to take in the stunning scenery. The second section is a second-growth forest, where you can appreciate the beauty of the forest and its natural regrowth.

After returning from the hike, a delicious picnic will be waiting for us to refresh and recover energy before heading back to the pier.
